Choose an unprotected AZW3
Start with a DRM-free book you own or are authorized to process. This service cannot decrypt a Kindle purchase or remove account protection, and a protected AZW3 is not made compatible by selecting MOBI as the destination.

Caliber reads the source and writes a MOBI package using the older format's capabilities. It may simplify styles, fonts, navigation, or image treatment so the result can be understood by legacy software.

Load the MOBI on the oldest device or application you need to support. Check the cover, table of contents, chapter boundaries, links, images, and a section with unusual typography before distributing the file.
How it works
The source is parsed as AZW3, also known as Kindle Format 8, and its records are
translated into a MOBI package. Caliber examines the reading order, book metadata,
markup, images, and style rules before it writes the legacy output. This is a real
repackaging operation: changing .azw3 to .mobi in a file name would not create the
headers, records, or internal references that a MOBI reader expects.
The important detail is that the destination has a smaller vocabulary. AZW3 can carry modern Kindle styling and richer layout decisions, while older MOBI readers expect a more limited HTML and CSS model. The converter has to choose fallbacks when the source uses capabilities the target cannot represent. A plain novel may appear nearly unchanged; a heavily designed title can look noticeably more basic while remaining readable.
The compatibility trade
This output makes sense when the receiving hardware is the constraint. An old e-reader can be perfectly comfortable with a simple MOBI, and a legacy upload process may reject newer ebook packaging before it ever examines the text. In those situations, a smaller feature set is an acceptable trade for delivery. The old device is the authority: a desktop preview alone cannot reveal its font substitution, image scaling, or navigation behavior.
Open the result at the beginning, middle, and end of the book. Test a chapter with an image, a link, a list, a quotation, and any unusual title treatment. Check that the cover still appears and that the table of contents lands on the intended chapters. For an illustrated manual, compare diagrams at the actual device resolution. Do not promise that the older file retains accessibility, typography, or layout features that were designed for KF8.
Keep AZW3 for capable readers
AZW3 should remain the master when it is the richer source. MOBI is a delivery copy for a narrow compatibility requirement, not a preservation format. If you later need an EPUB, a print PDF, or a modern Kindle package, rebuilding from the original avoids compounding the simplifications introduced by the legacy export.
DRM is separate from compatibility. A file can be perfectly well-formed AZW3 and still be inaccessible to a converter because its contents are encrypted. This service does not unlock such a book. A successful conversion only says that the readable content was repackaged; it does not certify that every Kindle-specific feature survived or that the recipient has permission to redistribute the result.
