Start from a well-lit garment shot
Folds and highlights are what will be preserved, so a flat, shadowless photo gives the recolor nothing to work with and returns something that looks printed on.

Only the hue of the garment is meant to change. The shading that describes the fabric, and everything that is not the garment, are meant to stay.

Look along collars, cuffs, and hems, and at any skin next to fabric. Color bleeding onto an arm is the first failure, and it is easy to miss at page size.
How it works
The photograph is scaled to about one and a fifth megapixels and repainted at 0.4 denoise, the lowest in the fashion family, because a hue change is the smallest edit here. The instruction names what must survive in unusual detail — every fold, crease, seam, stitch, button, and shadow, and the sheen and highlights at the same strength and in the same places — and permits exactly one change.
Everything outside the garment is excluded by name: the person, their skin, their hair, the background, and any other item of clothing.
The negative prompt leads with a flat colored garment, then lists the leaks: color on skin, color on hair, color on the background.
What a color is made of in a photograph
Two things produce the pixels on a shirt, and only one of them is the dye.
The diffuse component is light that has entered the fibers, bounced around, and come back out carrying the color of the dye. This is the part that should change, and in matt fabrics it dominates.
The specular component is light that reflected straight off the surface without entering it, so it carries the color of the lamp, not of the dye. On satin, silk, or leather this is a large share of the image, and it should barely change at all when a garment is dyed differently.
That distinction predicts everything about which recolors work. Matt cotton recolors cleanly. A satin dress recolored naively goes wrong because the highlights move with the hue when they should have stayed near the color of the light, and the result reads as a different, cheaper material rather than as the same dress in another color.
Preview versus promise
There is a line running through this whole category, and it is about who sees the image.
On one side is your own decision-making. Which of five colorways to sample, which to show a manufacturer, whether a print reads at all in navy. A recolor is genuinely useful there, and being slightly wrong costs nothing.
On the other side is a customer choosing from your photograph. There the image is part of a description, the difference between the render and the dye lot is measured in returns, and in several markets an image that misrepresents a product is a consumer-protection matter rather than a taste one.
The line to hold is simple. Recolor to decide. Photograph to sell.
Where it fails first
Three specific checks, all at full size rather than at thumbnail size.
The boundary between fabric and skin, especially at a cuff, a collar, or a neckline. A color that has crept a few pixels onto a wrist is invisible in a grid and obvious on a product page.
Any print, logo, or embroidery, which the pass is likely to redraw into something print-like rather than preserve.
And the highlights, compared against the source rather than judged alone. If the brightest parts of the garment have taken the new hue completely, the material has changed even though the shape has not.

The best case. Matt fabric has its color mostly in diffuse light, so a hue change behaves predictably and the folds carry through.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use this for a product listing?
For a preview to yourself or a supplier, yes. For the customer-facing image of a colorway you actually sell, photograph the real garment. A recolor is a rendering of a hue, and a returns rate is a measurement of how wrong it was.
Why does dark fabric recolor badly?
Because there is very little color information in it. A near-black garment is described almost entirely by shape and highlight, so a change to a saturated color is largely invention, and the invented version usually looks flatter than the real dye would.
What happens to a print or a logo?
