Build the Scene Around the Light You Already Have

The reason a composite looks fake is almost never the cut-out. Edges are easy now. What gives it away is that the product was lit by a softbox to its left and the scene it has been dropped into is lit by a window on the right, so the shadows disagree, the highlights sit on the wrong faces, and the color temperature of the two halves does not match. Generating a beautiful scene and pasting a product into it reproduces that problem perfectly. Generating the scene outward from the product does not.

How to use Generate Lifestyle Scene

    Note where the light on your product comes from

    Look at the highlight and the shadow on the product itself. That direction is what the scene has to agree with, and it is the thing to check afterwards.

    Run the extension

    The surroundings are built outward from the product, matched to the direction, softness, and color of the light already on it.

    Check the two halves against each other

    Compare the shadow direction on the product with the shadows in the new scene, and the warmth of the product's highlights with the warmth of the setting.

How it works

The photograph is scaled to about one and a fifth megapixels and repainted at the highest denoise in the product family, because nearly everything except the product is being created.

The instruction is deliberately directional: build a setting around the product, extending outward from it rather than replacing it, and match the new surroundings to the light already on the product — the same direction, the same softness, the same color temperature, with shadows falling the same way.

The negative prompt is unusual in that most of it describes disagreement rather than defect: light direction that disagrees with the product, mismatched color temperature, hard scene light on a softly lit product, and the product looking cut out and pasted.

The light is the thing that has to match

Composites fail on physics, and the physics is a short list.

Direction. Every shadow in a scene lit by one source points consistently. A product whose own shadow falls left in a room whose shadows fall right reads as wrong immediately, even to viewers who cannot name the problem.

Softness. A large source gives soft-edged shadows and gentle transitions; a small one gives hard edges. The product and the scene share a source, so they must share an answer.

Color. Daylight is cool, tungsten is warm, and an overcast sky is cooler still. A product carrying a warm cast placed in a cool scene looks like two photographs, because it is.

Bounce. Surfaces throw color back. A product on a red table picks up red on its underside, and a scene that adds a red table without adding that bounce has described a surface with no consequences.

Edges are last on this list and they are what most tooling optimizes for, which is why so many technically clean composites still look assembled.

Ambiguity cuts both ways

A product photographed on white with flat light and no shadow has almost no directional information in it, and that has an interesting consequence.

Nothing can contradict the generated scene, so the result rarely looks obviously wrong. It also means nothing anchors it — the pass invents a light and applies it to the surroundings, while the product continues to look like it was photographed under a softbox on a white background, because it was.

The outcome is an image that passes a glance and reads as flat when compared with a real photograph of the same kind of scene. Products with directional light are harder to place and produce better results when placed, which is the opposite of what people expect when they prepare a cut-out first.

Where this sits in a real workflow

For a product going in front of customers, the ordering that produces the fewest surprises is worth stating.

Photograph the product well, with directional light, and keep that file. Isolate it on white for the listing's main image, using the non-generative route so the product pixels stay exact.

Then, for the additional images, use this page to build context around the original photograph — not around the cut-out — so the scene inherits the light that is really there.

Verify the label and proportions in the result, and treat the scene as illustration rather than as evidence. The main image is where accuracy lives; this is where the product gets a place to be.

Frequently asked questions

Why not generate the background separately?

Because then two independently produced images have to agree about light, and nothing made them agree. Building outward from the product means the existing light is the starting condition rather than something to reconcile afterwards.

What are the tells of a mismatch?

Shadow direction first — the product's own shadow pointing one way while the scene's shadows point another. Then color temperature, where a warm product sits in a cool room. Then contrast, where a softly lit product appears in a scene full of hard-edged shadows.

Does the product survive?

It is instructed to and the denoise here is the highest in the product family, so it must be checked. Label, color, and proportions are the three to compare. If the product is the thing being sold from this image, verify all three at full size.
