Convert PPTX to PPT

This goes backwards on purpose. The legacy binary is bigger, opaque, and routinely quarantined by mail filters, so nobody chooses it without a reason. The reason is always a specific destination: a meeting room machine that was never updated, a kiosk, or a system that accepts one extension and nothing else.

How to use PPTX to PPT

    Upload the .pptx

    Any modern deck. The bigger and more recently designed it is, the more worth checking the result.

    Slides, shapes, text and media are re-expressed in the legacy compound structure that old PowerPoint expects.

    The whole point is one specific old machine. Testing in a current version of PowerPoint proves very little.

How it works

The .pptx package is read and its slides, shapes, text and media are written into the legacy compound binary. The deck stays editable in the destination — this is a format conversion rather than a flattening — but the destination has fewer capabilities than the source, so some constructs have nowhere exact to go.

Why the file grows

The modern format is a ZIP: its XML compresses well and its images are stored already compressed. The legacy binary is a flat structure holding media raw. The same deck routinely triples or quadruples in size on the way down, which is the opposite of what people expect from a conversion.

Watch attachment limits. A deck that emailed comfortably at 6 MB may not at 24 MB.

What simplifies

SmartArt is the most visible: it becomes grouped shapes. They render correctly and can be moved, but the diagram logic that let you add a box and have everything re-flow is gone.

Recent transitions and animations fall back to nearer equivalents or drop. Some newer chart types simplify. None of this loses content; it loses sophistication.

Consider PDF first

Before downgrading, ask what the old system actually needs. If it needs to display the slides rather than edit them, PDF is accepted about as widely as .ppt, preserves the appearance exactly, loses no features because it is not trying to represent any, and does not quadruple in size. Downgrade only when a genuine presentation file is required.

What simplifies on the way down

Converting to the older binary format is a downgrade, and it is worth knowing which parts of a deck are likely to change rather than discovering it on a projector.

Newer shape effects, some gradient and transparency handling, and any recent chart type may be flattened or approximated, because the older format has no way to describe them. SmartArt frequently becomes plain grouped shapes. Embedded video support is weaker.

The file also gets larger, since the binary format does not compress its contents the way a ZIP-based one does.

Do this when something genuinely cannot read .pptx, and check the slides that use anything visually elaborate before you present from the result.

The diagrams look correct but are now ordinary shapes rather than editable SmartArt, and several transitions fell back to simpler ones. Content is intact; sophistication is not.

Why is the PPT so much bigger?

Because the legacy format stores its content and media uncompressed, where .pptx is a ZIP. A deck with photographs can easily grow three or four times on the way down. This matters practically, since the resulting file is more likely to exceed a mail attachment limit at exactly the moment you are trying to send it somewhere old.

What actually gets lost?
