A Studio Backdrop Is a Gradient, Not a Color
Fill the space behind a subject with one flat gray and it looks like a subject on a swatch. Real studio backdrops never do that, because a light aimed at a paper sweep makes a bright pool where it hits and falls off towards the edges of the frame — and that falloff is the entire reason the eye reads a backdrop as somewhere the subject is standing rather than as a color behind them.

Check the subject separates by tone
A mid-gray subject on a mid-gray sweep merges. If yours is close in tone to the backdrop, this page will not fix that for you.

Look for a bright rim from the old scene
Any rim light on the subject came from wherever it was actually photographed. On a soft gray sweep, a hard rim reads as borrowed.
How it works
There is no model here beyond the one that finds the subject.
A segmentation model produces a matte of the subject from your upload. Separately, a three row image is built — dark, light, dark — and scaled up to the size of your photograph with bilinear interpolation, which turns those three values into a smooth vertical falloff: a bright horizontal band through the middle of the frame easing into darker gray above and below.
Your original image is then composited over that sweep through the matte. The subject's pixels are copied, not generated. Nothing about the person or product is repainted, and because there is no sampler the output is a deterministic function of the input.
Falloff is the cue
The reason a flat fill fails is worth stating precisely.
Light obeys distance. A studio light aimed at a paper sweep is closer to the part directly in front of it than to the top and bottom of the frame, so the paper is brighter there and dims away from it. Every backdrop anyone has ever photographed behaves this way. The gradient is not a stylistic choice made by photographers, it is a consequence of the lamp being in one place.
Which means the gradient is evidence. A viewer looking at a picture with a smooth tonal falloff behind a subject infers a light, a distance, and therefore a space. Take it away and there is nothing to infer — the surface is not lit by anything, so it is not a surface, so the subject is in front of a color.
Building the sweep from three tonal stops rather than filling with one color is the whole design of this page, and it is why the result looks photographed while a fill looks pasted.
Separation is decided before you upload
There is one thing this page cannot do for you.
A subject reads clearly against a backdrop when the two differ in tone, or when the subject is lit and the backdrop is not. A charcoal jacket on a mid gray sweep has neither, and the shoulders disappear into the background wherever the sweep happens to be bright.
That is a lighting decision made at capture. In a real studio it is solved with a separate light on the backdrop, or by moving the subject further from it so it goes darker, or by choosing a lighter paper. None of those has an equivalent after the shutter, because the missing information is the difference itself.
Look at your subject's tone before you run this, and if it is close to a middle gray, expect a merge at the edges of the pool.
When to use this instead of the repaint page
Two pages here put a subject on a new background and they suit opposite needs.
This one keeps the subject exactly and gives you a plain sweep. Use it for anything that must be accurate — a product going on a listing, a headshot where the person must be themselves, a set of images that need to match each other.
The replacement page repaints the whole frame, which lets it relight the subject to fit an interesting setting, at the cost of the subject being generated. Use that when the scene matters more than pixel fidelity.
They are not competing versions of one tool. They are the two ends of a real trade-off.

Frequently asked questions
Why not just fill the background with one color?
Because a uniform fill has no depth cue in it at all. Every real surface photographed under a light has a brightness gradient across it, so the absence of one is a signal the brain picks up immediately. A flat fill reads as a graphic; a sweep with falloff reads as a room.
Does it change my subject?
Not at all. There is no generative model anywhere in this workflow — a segmentation model produces a matte, and your original pixels are composited over a generated backdrop through it. Every pixel of the subject in the output is a pixel you uploaded, which is why product listings can use it.
What if my subject is the same tone as the backdrop?
Then it will merge, and no processing fixes that after the fact. Separation between a subject and a backdrop comes from a difference in tone or from a light aimed at one and not the other, both of which are decided at the shoot. A dark gray product on a gray sweep needs a different sweep or different lighting.
Will the result look the same every time?
Exactly the same. With no sampler in the chain there is no randomness, so running the same file twice produces two identical outputs. That matters if you are processing a set of images that need to look like they belong together.
