How it works
LibreOffice opens the DOCX package and reads its XML parts: document paragraphs, runs, styles, relationships, headers, footers, numbering, and embedded resources. It then maps that information into the compound binary document model used by DOC. The output is a newly encoded file, not the original ZIP with a different suffix.
That distinction explains both the usefulness and the limits. DOCX can describe modern drawing objects and document parts independently, while DOC comes from a period when Word stored several binary streams inside one OLE compound file. A converter must decide what an old application can understand when there is no matching record for a newer feature.
What usually survives
Paragraph text is the safest content. Heading hierarchy, basic character formatting, common paragraph styles, bulleted and numbered lists, simple tables, page margins, headers, footers, and ordinary inline pictures generally have a reasonable DOC representation. A document made from those building blocks often looks close enough for an old recipient, especially if it was authored with styles rather than manual spacing.
The conversion does not make a DOCX document older in every sense. It produces a compatibility copy. Fields may update differently, links can depend on the receiving application's security settings, and fonts still have to exist on the machine opening the result. Keep the source even when the first page looks right; later pages and less common objects are where the translation earns its review.
Where fidelity gives way
Modern Word has features that were designed after the DOC model stopped being the primary target. Content controls used for fillable forms, newer comments, SmartArt, theme-driven effects, and some equations or charts cannot simply be carried as their original structures. They may become static pictures, ordinary text, a simpler drawing, or disappear. A macro or embedded program is an even stronger case: this conversion is not a safe way to preserve executable document behavior.
Layout can shift even when every word remains. A text box positioned by eye, a table used as a page grid, or a document relying on a particular font gives the legacy layout engine less semantic information to work with. The result may gain a line, move a heading, or push a signature block onto another page. Those changes are not evidence that the file is corrupt; they are evidence that the two formats describe layout differently.
When DOC is the wrong target
If the document is finished and its appearance is the thing that must not move, use PDF instead. If it is still being edited, keep DOCX and give the recipient a PDF or an alternative modern format when possible. Choose DOC only when an actual legacy system requires it. The right workflow is to make the DOC for that system, open and inspect it there, and preserve the DOCX as the authoritative copy for future editing and exports.

Structured content has a direct enough equivalent in the older model. The headings become ordinary legacy paragraph styles and the table remains a table, so this is a good candidate when the receiving program only speaks the binary format.

The output is still a usable document, but it is not a feature-preserving round trip. Content controls and modern drawing objects have no dependable DOC equivalent, while comments are review metadata rather than body text.
Frequently asked questions
Why convert a DOCX back to the old DOC format?
A legacy reader, records system, macro-enabled workflow, or customer upload form may accept only the pre-2007 Word format. DOCX is the better working format, but compatibility is sometimes a hard requirement rather than a preference. Exporting a DOC gives that system a file it can parse while allowing you to retain the DOCX as the complete source document.
What features are most likely to be lost?
Modern content controls, SmartArt, some charts, newer equation objects, theme effects, threaded comments, and certain drawing or layout features are the main risks. The binary format has older substitutes for basic text, styles, tables, headers, and lists, but it cannot represent every Open XML part. Unsupported objects may be flattened, simplified, or omitted.
Will the pages look exactly the same after conversion?
Not necessarily. The text and broad structure often survive, but an old layout model can calculate line wrapping, floating objects, table widths, and page breaks differently. Missing fonts or manually positioned elements make the difference more visible. Open the DOC in the target application and inspect the pages that contain objects or tight pagination before sending it.
Is DOC smaller than DOCX?
Sometimes, but size should not be the reason to choose it. DOCX is a ZIP package whose XML compresses well, while DOC stores binary streams and may include compatibility data. Images and embedded objects dominate either format, so a conversion can produce a larger or smaller file without saying anything useful about its fidelity.
