Clean the ODT structure
Use named heading styles for chapters, remove comments or review material that should not be published, and make sure images are embedded rather than merely linked from a local computer. Preserve the original ODT before starting.

Test the table of contents, footnotes, image captions, lists, tables, and page breaks. Change font size in the reader and check a narrow screen because a successful conversion must still remain coherent when the page reflows.
How it works
ODT is an OpenDocument package. Inside it are XML descriptions of paragraphs, text runs, styles, lists, tables, notes, and relationships to images or other resources. Those parts describe more than a plain text file does, but they also describe a word-processing and print environment. EPUB takes the readable content from that package and reorganizes it into XHTML documents, a manifest, a spine, navigation, and CSS. Caliber performs that structural translation and compresses the result into an EPUB package.
The strongest signal is document semantics. A heading assigned through the Styles panel tells the converter where a section begins. Making a line larger with direct formatting changes its appearance but does not necessarily add a chapter boundary. Before exporting a long document, inspect the Navigator or outline view in the editor. If the outline is wrong there, the EPUB's contents menu is unlikely to repair it.
Open structure, different layout
Both ODT and EPUB are open formats, but open does not mean identical. ODT can express page styles, columns, anchored objects, frames, and print-oriented positioning. EPUB readers need content that can fit a narrow display and respond to user preferences. Paragraphs and inline illustrations usually make the crossing well. A frame floating next to a warning may become a block before or after that warning, and a table designed for a wide page can become cramped or difficult to navigate.
Footnotes, links, and captions deserve special attention. They may be carried into the new package, but reader applications differ in how they open a note or position a caption. Test the file in a desktop reader and on a phone if both audiences matter. Do not use a different page count as a quality metric; it is an expected consequence of reflow rather than proof that text was lost.
Review before distribution
Check the metadata, opening chapter, contents menu, section breaks, and the most complex page. Search for a term with an accent and compare a footnote against the ODT. Resize the type, rotate the device if relevant, and follow internal links. A valid ZIP container can still hold a confusing reading order, so reader-level proofing is part of the conversion rather than an optional publishing flourish.
Use ODT as the editable source and EPUB as the portable reading edition. If a document must preserve every page, form field, frame, or print position, PDF is a more honest delivery format. If the audience needs to revise the content, send the ODT instead of pretending that an EPUB is an interchangeable office document.

Named styles give the essays a sensible outline, and the photographs remain part of the reading copy. The original page breaks are not authoritative in EPUB, so a reader may see a different number of screens or pages for each essay.

Is ODT a good source for a reflowable EPUB?
Yes for structured prose such as essays, novels, and ordinary manuals. OpenDocument stores useful style and content information, so real headings, lists, links, and embedded images can become meaningful ebook material. It is less suitable for a document whose purpose depends on exact pages, floating frames, dense landscape tables, or a precisely positioned print composition.
Will page breaks, headers, and text frames remain in the EPUB?
Not as a guaranteed visual match. A reflowable EPUB has no fixed paper edge, and its reader recalculates lines and screens from the user's settings. A deliberate section break may remain useful, but repeated headers, page numbers, master-page decoration, and text frames can be omitted, converted to ordinary blocks, or appear in a different order. Inspect those boundaries in the output.
Can the converter unlock an encrypted ODT or preserve all review data?
No. The conversion reads accessible document content; it does not crack a password, remove DRM, or bypass document protection. Comments and revision marks are editorial information rather than dependable ebook content, so resolve them before export. Keep the protected or reviewed ODT separately, and use an unencrypted copy that you are authorized to publish as the conversion source.
