Convert PowerPoint to JPG

JPG is the wrong default for a slide and the right choice for a specific kind of slide. Its compression was designed for photographs, so a full-bleed image slide compresses beautifully, while a slide of text and flat color picks up haloes around every letter. The first slide is the one exported, because one image file holds one image.

    Decide whether JPG is right

    If the slide is mostly a photograph, yes. If it is text, charts or flat color, PNG will look better at a similar size.

    JPG artifacts appear first around hard edges. Small text on a colored background is where they are most visible.

How it works

The deck is opened and its first slide is rendered into a pixel grid at the slide's own dimensions: shapes drawn, text laid out with its fonts, images composited. That grid is then encoded as a JPG.

The encoding step is where this differs from the PNG route. JPG discards information the eye is least likely to miss, which works on photographs and is visible on text.

When JPG is genuinely the better choice

A slide that is mostly photograph. Full-bleed images, a background shot with a short headline over it, a photo collage: all of these compress well and produce a file small enough to upload or embed without thought.

When it is not

Anything with small text, thin rules, charts or flat color fields. The compression introduces ringing around hard boundaries, which reads as a faint halo along every letter and a soft blur on any fine line. Slides are usually exactly this kind of content, which is why PNG is the sensible default and JPG the considered exception.

The one-image rule

One JPG holds one image, so the first slide is what you get. The failure is quiet: a valid file containing a fraction of what you uploaded. For the whole deck, PDF paginates and keeps the text real.

What an image costs you

Selection, search, copying, indexing and screen-reader access all disappear the moment text becomes pixels. An image is the right output for a thumbnail or a social card and the wrong one for anything that a person needs to read carefully or act on.

When a slide really is a photograph

The general advice is to prefer PNG for slides, and this is the case where it does not apply.

A full-bleed image slide — a photograph filling the frame with a short caption, or none — is a photograph as far as the encoder is concerned. JPEG was built for exactly that and will produce a noticeably smaller file than PNG, which has no flat color to exploit.

The test is simple: if you can see large areas of a single color, use PNG. If the slide is continuous tone from edge to edge, JPG is the better choice and the text fringing has almost nothing to fringe.

Flat white and sharp black text is the worst case for a lossy encoder. PNG would be sharper and, for this kind of content, often no larger.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use JPG or PNG for a slide?

PNG unless the slide is mostly photographic. Slides are usually flat color, hard edges and text, which is exactly what lossy compression handles badly: the encoder spends its bits on smooth gradients and leaves visible haloes around lettering. PNG is lossless and, for flat content, frequently produces a comparable file size anyway. JPG earns its place on a full-bleed image slide.

Why only the first slide?

Because a JPG file holds exactly one image. There is no standard way to store a sequence in one, so a converter has to choose, and the first slide is what people mean when they ask for a picture of a deck. If you need every slide, convert to PDF, which is built to carry a sequence of pages and keeps the text selectable as well.

Can I get the text back out of the JPG?

Not as text. Rendering to an image turns every character into pixels, so it cannot be selected, searched, corrected or read by assistive software. Optical character recognition can recover an approximation, but it is a reconstruction rather than the original and it will make mistakes. If the words matter, keep a PDF alongside the image.
