Convert ODP to JPG

Most Impress slides should not be JPGs. The format compresses photographs well and flat color badly, so a text slide gains visible haloes while a full-bleed image slide compresses cleanly into a much smaller file. This page exists for the second case, and says so plainly rather than presenting JPG as a neutral choice.

How to use ODP to JPG

    Ask whether the slide is photographic

    If it is mostly an image, JPG is right. If it is text or flat fills, use PNG instead.

    Move the slide you want to the front, since only the first is exported.

    Compression artifacts appear first around lettering and thin lines, and they are permanent.

How it works

The ODP is unzipped and its first slide is rendered into a pixel grid at the slide's own dimensions, then encoded as a JPG. The encoding is where information is discarded, and where this differs from the PNG route.

The honest recommendation

Use PNG unless the slide is a photograph.

That is not a stylistic preference. JPG's compression model assumes photographic content — smooth gradients, no hard boundaries — and spends its budget accordingly. A slide is usually the opposite: solid fills meeting each other at sharp edges, with text on top. The encoder cannot represent those cheaply, so it approximates them, and the approximation shows as ringing around every letter.

Where JPG genuinely wins

A full-bleed photographic slide with little or no small text. Here the compression does what it was designed for and the file can be several times smaller than the equivalent PNG, which matters for a social card or an email header.

Permanence

The artifacts cannot be removed later. Saving the JPG as a PNG afterwards preserves them. If a clean copy might be needed, export one now from the ODP rather than hoping to recover it.

One slide only

A JPG contains one image, so the first slide is exported and the rest are not. For the whole deck, PDF paginates and keeps the text real, which almost always beats a set of pictures.

JPEG is the wrong choice for most slides

The compression that makes JPEG excellent for photographs is precisely what damages a slide. It works by discarding fine detail in areas of rapid change, and a hard black edge against a white background is the sharpest change there is.

The result is visible fringing around every letter — a faint halo that gets worse at smaller file sizes and never entirely goes away. On body text at slide sizes it is obvious once you know to look.

Choose JPG when the slide is essentially a full-bleed photograph with little text. For anything with a title, bullets or a diagram, PNG is smaller as well as sharper, because flat color compresses extremely well losslessly.

The photograph is what JPG was designed for, so the file is small enough to upload anywhere and the headline is large enough that the artifacts around it do not read at normal size.

Flat white behind sharp black text is the worst input for a lossy encoder. PNG stores it exactly and, for this content, at a comparable file size.

Frequently asked questions

When is JPG actually the right choice for a slide?

When the slide is mostly a photograph and file size matters — a social card, an email header, an upload field with a tight limit. In those cases the compression works as intended and the saving over PNG is real. For the ordinary slide of text, charts and flat color, PNG is both sharper and often no larger, so JPG costs quality for nothing.

Are the artifacts reversible?

No. Lossy compression discards information permanently, so re-saving the JPG as a PNG afterwards preserves the damage rather than undoing it. If you may need a clean version later, export PNG as well and keep it. Converting the same slide again from the ODP is the only way to get an undamaged image.

Can I export the whole deck this way?

Not into one file. A JPG holds a single image, so only the first slide is exported. Convert to PDF for every slide: it paginates properly and, unlike any image format, keeps the text selectable and searchable, which is usually more useful than a folder of pictures.
