How it works
Four steps, and the product itself is untouched in all of them.
A segmentation model reads the photo and produces a mask separating the product from everything else. The dimensions of your original are measured. A flat field of light gray is created at exactly those dimensions. The product pixels are then composited onto that field using the mask, without resizing.
That last detail matters more than it sounds. Compositing with rescaling turned on would stretch the product to fill the canvas, which is a common way for product shots to come back subtly wrong in proportion. Here the canvas is built to match, so nothing needs to stretch.
The shadow problem
Every cutout has this problem and it is worth understanding rather than working around by trial and error.
When you photograph an object on a surface, three things end up in the frame: the object, the surface, and the shadow the object casts onto that surface. Your eye uses that third thing to decide the object is really there. It reads contact shadow as weight and position.
Removing the background removes the surface and the shadow together, because neither of them is the product. What remains is geometrically correct and physically implausible — the object is somewhere, but nothing says where.
This tool does not invent a shadow, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a missing feature. A generated shadow has to guess the light direction, its softness, and the height of the object above the surface. Guessing wrong is more noticeable than having none at all, because a shadow falling the wrong way reads as an error while a floating object reads as a catalog convention.
Where a flat backdrop is the right answer
Marketplace listings usually want exactly this. Amazon, eBay and most retail platforms ask for products on plain backgrounds, and a floating object on a neutral field is the established look — nobody reads it as a mistake because everything around it looks the same.
Comparison grids, spec sheets, and any layout where several products sit together also benefit, because a shared flat backdrop removes the visual noise of several different shooting environments.
Where it is the wrong answer is lifestyle imagery, hero shots, and anything meant to feel photographed rather than cataloged. There the missing shadow is the first thing a viewer notices, even if they cannot say why.
Choosing a source photo
Contrast between the product and its surroundings is what the separation step needs. A black product on a black surface is the reliable failure: the model has no boundary to find and will either miss part of the object or take some of the table with it.
Thin structures — handles, straps, stems, chair legs — are the second thing to check. They occupy few pixels and are the first detail a mask loses.

The wood is strongly unlike the shoe, so the cut is clean. The shoe now appears to float, because the shadow it cast on the table was part of the background that was removed.

Transparent products are the hard case. Whatever was visible through the glass belonged to the old background, so the bottle can arrive with the wrong scene still inside it.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my product look like it is floating?
Because the shadow it was resting in has been removed along with everything else that was not the product. A real photograph contains a contact shadow where the object meets the surface, and that shadow is the single strongest cue that the object is physically present. Compositing onto a flat field removes it, and nothing here invents a replacement. If the image needs to look photographed rather than cataloged, add a soft shadow afterwards.
Can I choose a different backdrop color?
Not on this page. The backdrop is a fixed very light gray, chosen because it separates a white product from the background while still reading as neutral against most page designs. A pure white field would make a white product disappear at its edges, which is the failure this specific color exists to avoid.
Is the product itself changed at all?
No. The color pixels inside the mask are copied across untouched — nothing is regenerated, relit, or recolored. Only the pixels outside the mask are replaced. That means a label stays readable and a color stays accurate, and it also means any problem with the original product photo comes through unchanged.
Does the output stay the same size as my photo?
Yes. The backdrop is created at the source image dimensions and the product is placed onto it without rescaling, so a 2400 by 1600 photo returns a 2400 by 1600 image. Nothing is cropped or resized, which matters if the shot was already framed for a particular listing template.
