Fill the Gap in a Torn Photograph
Every other restoration page on this site recovers something that is still on the paper. This one does not, because a tear means the paper is gone and with it everything that was printed there. Nothing can be recovered from an absence. What comes back is the model's account of what would plausibly have been there, which is a useful thing and a completely different thing, and the distinction matters most exactly where people care most.

Reassemble before scanning
Lay the pieces together on the scanner glass in their correct positions. Every piece you place is a piece the model does not have to invent.

Tape the back if you must tape
Never put adhesive on the image side. Archival tape on the reverse, or nothing at all if the flatbed lid will hold the pieces in place.

Compare against the scan and decide whether the filled area is acceptable as an interpretation, because that is what it is.
How it works
The scan is scaled to about one megapixel and repainted by an image editing model at a higher denoise than the other restoration pages use, with a fresh seed each run. The instruction asks for the gap to be filled so that edges, surfaces, and background continue across it, and the negative prompt argues against the characteristic failures: a visible seam, a leftover white gap, a ragged paper edge, and duplicated limbs.
The denoise has to be higher here because there is no faint version of the answer to strengthen. The region is blank, and blank has to be replaced rather than adjusted.
There is nothing to restore
Restoration normally means recovering something that survived in a degraded form. A faded dye still holds its ratio. A crease still has picture beneath it. A stain still lets some tone through.
A tear has none of that. The emulsion that carried those pixels is on the floor or in a bin, and no amount of processing reaches it. Whatever appears in the gap is generated from context: the model sees a roofline entering one side and continues it, sees a pattern of grass and extends it, sees half a shoulder and completes the other half in the way shoulders usually complete.
That is genuinely valuable for most of a photograph. Sky, walls, floors, hedges, fabric, and pavement have no particular identity, and a plausible version is indistinguishable from the real one in every way that matters. The problem only appears where the missing content was specific.
A tear across a face
This is the case worth being careful about, and it is the most common reason people find this page.
A face is the part of a photograph that cannot be inferred. The model knows what faces look like in general, so it will produce a jaw, a cheek, an eye, and they will be well formed and consistent with the visible half. What it does not know is which jaw. The output is a face that fits, not the face that was there.
For a print to hang on a wall, that is often exactly what a family wants, and there is nothing wrong with choosing it. For an identity document, a historical record, a legal matter, or anything someone might later rely on, it is the wrong tool, and the tear should stay.
If you do use it, say so when you share the result. A reconstruction described as one is useful. A reconstruction mistaken for a photograph quietly replaces somebody's memory of a face.
Scanning a torn print
More is won here than in any setting on this page.
Find every fragment, including the small ones, and lay them on the scanner glass in position. The pieces do not need to meet perfectly and they do not need to be attached. The lid will hold them. Each fragment you include removes a region the model would otherwise have had to invent.
Do not use tape on the front. Adhesive on the emulsion pulls the image off when it is eventually removed, and it will eventually be removed. Do not trim edges to make them line up, and do not glue anything to a backing board. All of it is irreversible, and a torn original is still an original.
Scan once at the highest resolution the machine offers, keep that file permanently, and treat everything after it as a copy.

Frequently asked questions
Is the filled area accurate?
It cannot be. Accuracy would require information about what was printed on the missing paper, and that information does not exist anywhere in the file. What you get is a region consistent with its surroundings — plausible, coherent, and confident — assembled from what photographs usually look like rather than from what yours looked like.
Should I use it on a torn face?
That is your decision to make deliberately rather than by default. The result will look like a complete person, and for a printed keepsake many families find that worth having. For anything presented as a record of how someone looked, a visible tear is more honest than a smooth invention nobody can audit.
Does it only change the torn part?
No, and this is a real limitation. There is no mask here, so the whole frame is repainted and every area is redrawn at some level, including faces far from the tear. Compare the two files at full size, and if only the gap needed work, consider whether a surface repair page would serve you better.
What if I still have the missing piece?
Then use it. A scan of the reassembled print, even with the tear line visible, contains real information that no model can substitute for. Place the fragments on the glass, scan once, and let this handle only the seam. Never trim the edges to make them meet.
