How to use Restore Old Photo

Scan or photograph the print evenly
Flat light with no glare. A phone shot under a window works; a shot with a reflection across the emulsion does not, because the glare is unrecoverable.

Open both files side by side and look at eyes, mouths, and hairlines. Fading is uniform, so any change that is not uniform came from the model.
How it works
Your scan is resampled to around one and a half megapixels and repainted by an image editing model at a low denoise, with a fresh seed each run. The instruction asks for recovered contrast and a neutralised cast while holding every face, garment, object, and edge as photographed, and the negative prompt pushes against the two things a model likes to do unasked: saturate, and improve.
Low denoise is the whole design. The picture already contains everything that should be in the output, so the model is being used to redistribute tone rather than to build anything, and it is given as little room to redraw as the job allows.
Fading is not damage in the usual sense
It is worth separating the two, because people arrive at restoration pages with both and they are not the same problem.
A torn print has lost material. There is a region where the answer is genuinely absent, and any tool that fills it is guessing. A creased print has a physical mark sitting on top of the image. A faded print has neither. Every part of the picture is still recorded on the paper; the difference between the darkest and lightest parts has simply shrunk, sometimes to the point where a face is a few levels of gray apart from the wall behind it.
That is a much better situation than it looks. Compressed information is still information, and stretching it back out is a well-defined operation rather than a reconstruction. It is the reason a photograph that looks nearly gone can come back convincingly, while a photograph with a small tear across it cannot come back honestly at all.
The cast is one layer having died
The pink or orange tone on prints from the sixties through the eighties has a specific cause, and knowing it tells you what can be fixed.
A color print builds the image from three dye layers stacked on the paper. Those dyes are organic and they break down under light, heat, and humidity — but not at the same rate. In most of the common processes the cyan dye is the first to go. As it weakens, the magenta and yellow beneath it are no longer balanced against anything, and the print drifts warm and then frankly pink.
So the cast is not something on the print. It is the absence of one third of the print, showing up as color.
What can be recovered and what is a guess
This distinction decides how much you should trust the output.
Where a layer has faded but not vanished, the balance between the three is recoverable, because all three still carry a signal and the relationship between them can be restored. This is the common case and it is why heavily pink family photographs often come back looking essentially correct.
Where a layer has gone entirely in some region — a sun-bleached band, a white patch behind glass — there is nothing left to rebalance. The color that comes back there is the model's idea of what belongs, informed by the rest of the picture. It will usually look reasonable. It is not a record.
The practical rule: trust the tone, verify the color. If it matters what shade the sari or the car actually was, ask a person, not this.
Which restoration page you want

If the print is faded, weak, or cast towards pink and otherwise intact, you are in the right place. Frequently asked questions
How is this different from repairing a damaged photo?
Fading weakens information that is still present everywhere on the print, so the job is to stretch it back out. Damage destroys information in particular places, so the job is to invent replacements. Those need different settings and carry very different risks, which is why they are separate pages rather than one.
Why do old photos turn red or pink?
A color print stores the picture in three dye layers, and they do not last equally long. The cyan dye is the least stable in most processes, so it disappears first and leaves the magenta and yellow behind unbalanced. The pink cast is not dirt on the print, it is one of the three layers having partly gone.
Can it know what color my mother's dress actually was?
No, and this is the honest limit of the page. Where a dye layer has faded evenly, the balance can be recovered by arithmetic. Where it has gone completely, the color returned is a plausible one rather than a remembered one. If a specific color matters to you, check it against someone who was there.
Will it sharpen a photo that was blurred when it was taken?
No. Camera shake, a missed focus, and subject movement are recorded in the negative and are part of the picture rather than part of the aging. This recovers what time removed. It does not add detail the camera never captured, and asking it to would mean inventing features on a face.
