How to use Watercolor

Choose a photo with light in it
Watercolor lives in the upper half of the tonal range. A bright, airy photograph converts well; a moody one with heavy shadow does not.

The photo is read at about one megapixel and a new image is painted from it in washes, keeping your subject, pose, and composition.

Look at the darkest area first
That is where the medium runs out. If the deep shadows have gone flat and gray, the photograph was the wrong candidate rather than the result being wrong.
How it works
Your photo is scaled so its total area is around one megapixel, keeping the original proportions. An image-editing model reads that copy alongside an instruction describing a hand-painted watercolor illustration: transparent washes, paper texture, natural edges, a restrained palette, with the subject, pose, and composition preserved.
A second instruction rules out distorted identity, malformed anatomy, added objects, unreadable text, and watermarks.
The model repaints at high strength, traveling a long way from the source photograph. Each run begins from fresh noise, so a second attempt gives a different painting rather than the same one repeated.
The medium is subtractive
Almost every other kind of painting adds light. Watercolor removes it.
You begin with white paper, which is the brightest thing the finished picture will ever contain. Every stroke of transparent pigment blocks a little of that brightness. Layers stack, and stacking only ever makes an area darker. There is no white paint to come back with, no way to lighten a passage once it is down, and no correcting a mark except by darkening around it.
This changes how a painting is planned. Highlights are not applied at the end; they are gaps, decided at the beginning and protected all the way through. A watercolorist looks at a subject and works out what to leave alone.
That reserved white is what makes the medium look the way it does. The bright areas have a clean, untouched quality that a lightened area never has, and recognizing it is how you tell a real watercolor from a photograph with its saturation reduced.
Where the tonal range runs out
The practical consequence is a limit at the dark end.
Transparent pigment reaching for black needs layer upon layer, and each layer dulls the one beneath. Real painters solve it by mixing dark colors rather than using black, which gives shadows that are deep and still colored. What nobody gets is the flat, absolute darkness a photograph produces without effort.
So a photograph with a bright subject against a dark background, or a face lit hard from one side, is asking for the one thing the medium withholds. The repaint comes back with those shadows opened up and gray, and the drama that made you choose the photograph is gone.
Photographs that survive are bright and open — daylight, pale skies, scenes with tone concentrated in the upper half of the range. Landscapes, streets, flowers, architecture in sun. The rule is not about subject matter, it is about where the light sits.
The accidents are too well behaved
This is the giveaway, and it is worth naming because it cannot be fixed here.
Watercolor is famous for effects the painter does not fully control. A bloom where a wet brush touches a drying wash and pushes pigment outward in a ragged ring. A backrun that blossoms overnight. Granulation where heavy pigment settles into the pits of the paper. A hard edge left where a puddle stopped and dried.
These are losses of control, and painters spend years learning to invite them rather than command them.
A model has learned what they look like, not what causes them. So it places a bloom where a bloom would look good — in a corner that needed interest, along an edge that wanted softening. The result is a painting in which every accident is well judged, which is precisely what a painting full of accidents does not look like.
At small sizes nobody notices. Looked at properly, the tidiness is the thing that reads as machine-made, more than any brush mark does.

Frequently asked questions
How is this different from the oil painting page?
They are opposite media. Oil is opaque and builds upward, so it can cover a mistake and lay a bright highlight over a dark ground. Watercolor is transparent and only ever darkens, so highlights have to be planned as gaps left unpainted. The results differ most in the light areas, where oil looks applied and watercolor looks reserved.
Why does my dark photo look weak?
Because transparent pigment cannot reach a true black without repeated layering that turns dull and muddy, and the model has learned that limit from real paintings. A photograph whose subject depends on deep shadow is asking the medium to do the thing it does worst, and the result will read as pale rather than dramatic.
Is the paper texture real?
No, it is drawn. Real paper texture is a physical surface that pigment settles into, which is why granulation pools in the hollows and why the same paper looks different under raking light. What you get is a picture of that effect, which is convincing on a screen and stops being convincing on a print you can see across.
Why does every version look slightly too neat?
Because watercolor's charm comes from accidents — blooms, backruns, a wash drying into a hard edge where you did not want one. A model generates those marks deliberately, placing them where they flatter the picture. Real ones land wherever the water went. Tidiness is the usual giveaway, and there is no setting here that adds genuine mess.
