Retouch a Portrait Without Replacing the Person

Professional retouchers have worked to one rule for decades and it has nothing to do with software. Remove what is temporary, keep what is permanent. A spot that will be gone in a week can go. A mole, a freckle pattern, a scar, a line someone has had since they were thirty — those are not flaws in the photograph, they are the person in the photograph, and a picture without them is a picture of somebody else.

How to use AI Face Retouch

    Decide what is temporary before you run it

    Look at the face and name what you want gone. If you cannot say it will be absent in a month, it is a feature rather than a blemish.

    A low denoise repaint reduces surface marks while the instruction holds pores, freckles, moles, scars, and every proportion in place.

    Check the skin at full size

    Zoom to one hundred percent on a cheek. If the pores are gone, the pass went too far and the result will read as plastic on any large screen.

How it works

Your portrait is scaled to about one and a fifth megapixels and repainted at a low denoise with a fresh seed each run. The instruction asks for temporary blemishes and stray marks to be reduced, and then names six things to leave alone: pores, fine texture, freckles, moles, scars, and the shape of every feature. The negative prompt argues against plastic skin, an airbrushed surface, removed moles, removed freckles, and any change to the face's proportions.

The denoise is the lowest of the portrait pages on this site. There is nothing here that needs rebuilding, only a small amount that needs reducing, and every extra unit of denoise is another chance for the model to improve something nobody asked it to.

Temporary and permanent

The rule at the top of the page is worth expanding, because it makes almost every decision for you.

Temporary things: a spot, a patch of irritation, a stray hair across the face, a smudge of make-up, a shine from the flash, a crumb, a red mark where glasses were sitting. These were true for an afternoon. A photograph is usually trying to say something about a person rather than about an afternoon, so removing them brings it closer to accurate rather than further away.

Permanent things: moles, birthmarks, freckles, scars, gaps between teeth, asymmetry, the lines a face has settled into. These are how people recognize each other. A friend looking at the retouched version notices something is wrong before they work out what, and the effect is a portrait that is technically cleaner and less like you.

The rule fails in exactly one place, which is when someone asks for their own permanent feature to be removed. That is their call and not a technical question at all.

Why the pores matter more than the spots

If you compare a good retouch and a bad one at a distance, they look similar. At full size they are not close.

Skin has fine structure at a scale of a fraction of a millimeter — pores, the texture of the surface, tiny variations in tone. A blemish sits at roughly the same scale as some of that structure, which is precisely why crude blemish removal takes the structure with it. What is left is a smooth region with correct color and no detail, and the eye reads that as a surface that is not skin.

That is the plastic look, and once you have seen it you cannot unsee it. It is also why this page is built as a restrained pass rather than a strong one: the difference between a good retouch and an obvious one is almost entirely how much texture survived.

The screen you are checking on

One practical note that catches people out.

Retouching decisions made on a phone will not hold up on a laptop, and decisions made on a laptop will not hold up in print. A phone screen is small enough that plastic skin looks smooth and lost texture looks clean. The same file on a twenty seven inch monitor, or at A3, shows every place the texture went.

If the picture is going somewhere large, check it somewhere large before you decide it is finished.

Freckles are named in the instruction and should survive. Check them specifically, because a general skin pass is the thing most likely to thin them out.

Frequently asked questions

Will it remove my moles?

It is instructed not to, and moles are named explicitly in both the positive and negative prompt for that reason. Check anyway. Beyond how a face should look, a mole that disappears from your photographs removes the record you would compare against if you ever needed to notice it changing.

Why does it leave the skin texture?

Because texture is what makes skin read as skin. Pores, fine lines, and slight unevenness are how the eye recognizes a real surface, and removing them produces the plastic look that people identify as retouched within a second even when they cannot say why. The denoise is kept low specifically to protect it.

How is this different from a beautifier?

This page does not change any proportion. A beautifier applies an idea of what a face should look like, which means moving features. This removes surface marks and stops. If the shape of the nose or jaw in the output differs from the input at all, that is a fault here rather than a feature.

Is it acceptable to retouch a professional headshot?

Generally yes, within this rule. A headshot is meant to show how you usually look rather than how you looked on one particular Tuesday, so clearing a temporary spot is uncontroversial. Reshaping the face is a different act, and people who meet you notice the gap.
