Soften Lines Without Removing the Expression

Lines on a face are not marks that landed on it. They are where the skin folds when the muscles underneath contract, which means they sit exactly along the paths that expression travels. Delete them and you have not removed a flaw, you have removed the record of a person having smiled and frowned and squinted for decades, and the face left behind reads as blank rather than young.

How to use Remove Wrinkles

    Decide which lines are doing work

    Crow's feet, smile lines, and the fold beside the nose carry expression. A crease from sleeping or a line deepened by hard light does not.

    The deepest folds are softened while the instruction holds the lines the expression is made of, the skin texture, and the person's actual age.

    Look at the eyes and the forehead

    These are the two places over-correction shows. A blank forehead above an animated mouth is the classic failure and reads instantly as wrong.

How it works

Your portrait is scaled to about one and a fifth megapixels and repainted at a low denoise with a fresh seed each run. The instruction is written as a reduction rather than a deletion: soften the deepest folds without erasing them, keep the lines the expression is made of, keep the skin texture, and keep the age the person actually is.

The negative prompt names the four ways this goes wrong — a flattened expression, a blank forehead, erased smile lines, and a de-aged face — because a model asked simply to remove wrinkles will produce all four and consider the job done.

Lines are geometry, not damage

The reason a light touch matters here more than on the spot pages comes down to what a wrinkle physically is.

Skin over a muscle folds along a line perpendicular to how that muscle pulls. Raise your eyebrows and the forehead folds horizontally. Squint and the skin beside the eye folds in a fan. Do either ten thousand times over forty years and the fold stops fully flattening between repetitions.

So the map of lines on a face is a map of what that face has spent its life doing. It is the opposite of arbitrary. It is also the reason the lines line up with the expression currently on the face — they were carved by that expression in the first place.

Remove them and the face keeps the muscle positions of a smile without any of the surface consequences, which is a combination that does not occur in nature. The eye is very good at noticing that, and reads it as something being off well before it can identify what.

The light is doing half of it

Before deciding a photograph has too many lines, look at where the light came from.

Light traveling nearly parallel to the skin catches every raised edge and drops a shadow behind it. A fold half a millimeter deep can become a dark line several pixels wide under a ceiling spot or a low afternoon sun. The same face under an overcast sky or a large soft source shows a fraction of that.

This matters practically because it means much of what a wrinkle removal pass is asked to fix was never about the skin. It was about the lighting. Reducing fold depth brings the photograph closer to how the face looks in ordinary light, which is a defensible thing to do and is roughly what this page targets.

If you are taking the photograph, moving the subject away from a hard source achieves more than any editing afterwards.

Where over-correction shows first

Two places, and checking them takes fifteen seconds.

The forehead, because it goes completely blank. A forehead with no horizontal variation at all above a face that is clearly animated is the single most recognizable retouching artifact there is, and it survives being viewed on a phone.

The area beside the eyes, because that is where a smile is verified. A viewer does not consciously check for crow's feet, but they do register whether the smile involves the whole face. Remove that fan of lines and the same mouth reads as polite instead of pleased.

Fix both by running the pass and accepting a smaller improvement, rather than by running it again.

Frequently asked questions

Why not remove the lines completely?

Because they carry meaning. The lines beside the eyes appear when someone smiles for real, and a viewer reads their absence as an expression that does not reach the eyes. Erasing them produces a face that looks pleasant and slightly false, which is a worse outcome than looking your age.

Will it make me look younger?

Not deliberately, and the instruction says so. De-aging means changing bone structure, skin tone, and volume as well as lines, which is a different and much larger edit. This reduces how deep the folds read while leaving the face recognizably the age it is.

What makes lines look worse in some photos?

Light direction, mostly. Hard light from above or the side rakes across the skin and turns every small fold into a shadow with a bright edge, which can double or triple how lined a face appears. The same person under soft frontal light looks dramatically smoother with no editing at all.

Should I use this on a portrait of an older relative?

Very gently if at all. A face that has been lived in is usually the point of the photograph, and the version with the lines taken out is often the version the family likes least. Soften a distracting shadow if you must and leave the rest of it alone.
