    Choose a photo with a clear silhouette

    Hair shape, clothing, and pose are what carry across. A cluttered background or an obscured outline removes the identifiers the style can actually keep.

How it works

Your photo is scaled so its total area is around one megapixel, keeping the original proportions. An image-editing model reads that copy alongside an instruction describing a polished anime-inspired illustration: clear linework, expressive eyes, cel shading, and a coherent background, with the subject identity, pose, and composition preserved.

A second instruction rules out distorted identity, extra limbs, malformed hands, unreadable text, and watermarks.

The model redraws at high strength. Each run begins from fresh noise, so a second attempt gives a different illustration rather than the same one again.

Likeness has nowhere to go

The instruction asks for identity to be preserved. It is worth understanding why that request is only partly satisfiable.

Face recognition, in people and in software, leans on a small set of measurements — the shape of the nose, the shape and spacing of the eyes, the proportions between brow, nose, and chin, and the texture of skin at close range. These are the channels that distinguish one person from another.

The anime face schema removes most of them by design. The nose becomes a short mark or a shadow. The eyes are enlarged to a size no human has and drawn to a convention shared across characters. The mouth shrinks. Skin becomes a flat color with one shadow tone and no pores at all. What is left is not a loose version of your face; it is a standardized face with some of your attributes applied to it.

So the resemblance has to be carried by whatever the style does keep: hair shape, hair color, eye color, skin tone, clothing, accessories, build, and expression. Those come through strongly and reliably.

This changes what a good result looks like. A conversion that keeps your haircut, your glasses, and your particular way of holding your face is succeeding. One that produces a face measurably matching yours is not something the style permits.

Cel shading and what it implies

The other half of the look is how surfaces are lit.

Cel shading divides everything into flat regions of color with hard boundaries between them. A lit side and a shadow side, one step, no gradient. This came from painting on physical cels, where each color was applied flat and a smooth transition would have meant painting an unaffordable number of intermediate tones.

The consequence for a photograph is a heavy loss of information. A photograph holds a continuous range of tone across every surface, and cel shading collapses that to two values. Whatever your face's form was doing between those values is gone, which is another reason likeness is expensive here and one reason the style is so readable.

It also means the shadow boundary becomes a drawn line rather than a lighting fact. Where it falls is a decision, and the model places it where it looks right, which is not necessarily where your light actually was.

You get key art, not a frame

The output tends to look better made than the medium it imitates, and that is a consistent, explainable bias.

Television anime is produced at enormous speed under real budget limits, so frames are simplified, held, reused, and drawn with as few lines as the shot can survive. The pictures that circulate widely enough to end up in a training set are the opposite: covers, posters, promotional key visuals, magazine illustrations, artwork made slowly by the best people available.

A model trained on that distribution produces that distribution. Expect rendered hair with multiple highlight bands, detailed eyes, careful background painting — the register of a poster.

If you wanted the flatter, rougher look of an actual broadcast frame, this will not give it to you, and the reason is not a setting.

Backgrounds convert well because anime backgrounds are painted rather than cel shaded, so the model has more room and less to be caught getting wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it not look like me?

Because the style removes the channels your likeness lives in. Recognition depends heavily on nose shape, eye shape, the spacing between features, and skin texture — and anime reduces the nose to a mark, standardizes the eyes, and flattens skin entirely. What remains is hair, silhouette, coloring, and expression, so those become the whole of the resemblance.

Can I use this as a profile picture or avatar?

It works well for that, better than it works as a portrait. An avatar needs to be identifiable as consistently yours rather than anatomically accurate, and hair, color, and clothing carry that job easily. Generate a few and pick the one people would associate with you rather than the one that looks most like your face.

Why does it look more polished than actual anime?

Because most anime is made under severe time pressure and simplified accordingly, whereas the images used to teach these models are heavily weighted towards promotional key art, covers, and illustrations — the pieces that got the most attention. So the output resembles a poster for a series rather than a frame from an episode of one.

Are hands still a problem?

Frequently, and the negative instruction names malformed hands for that reason. Hands have many joints, high variation, and are usually small in the frame, and anime simplifies them in ways that vary between artists so there is no single convention to fall back on. Check any visible hand before using the result.
