Lossless is an archive decision, not a listening one
FLAC exists to answer a specific question: how do you keep a collection so that you never have to rip it again? Its answer is compression that is mathematically reversible. A FLAC decodes to precisely the samples that went into it, bit for bit, in about half the space of raw audio.
That makes it excellent as a master and awkward as a delivery format. The files are still large by phone standards. Car stereos frequently do not read it. Older players, most Bluetooth speakers with onboard storage, and a good deal of embedded hardware never supported it.
The usual arrangement is not to choose between the two but to keep both: FLAC as the library, MP3 as the copies you actually carry around. Converting is not a downgrade of your collection, it is producing a listening copy from a master.
How it works
The FLAC is decoded back to the original samples — losslessly, so this step introduces nothing — and those samples are then encoded to MP3 at a high variable-bitrate setting.
That makes this a first-generation MP3 encode, which is the best case. The encoder is working from the actual audio rather than from something another encoder already picked over, so it is making its own decisions about what to discard rather than compounding somebody else's.
What is actually being discarded
MP3 removes what the ear is unlikely to register: sounds masked by louder sounds close to them in time or frequency, content at the extremes of hearing, and detail in dense passages where a great deal is happening at once.
Most of the time this is genuinely inaudible. Where people do hear it is in specific material — cymbals, applause, room reverb tails, anything with a lot of high-frequency noise that the model handles less gracefully than tones. If you have a recording you know well and good headphones, those are the places to listen.
Do not delete the FLAC
This is the whole point of having it. Once the FLAC is gone, every future conversion starts from the MP3 and inherits its compromises permanently. If a better format appears, or you want a higher bitrate, or a device arrives that reads FLAC after all, the master is what makes any of that possible.

Car head units are where FLAC support most often runs out. The MP3 plays, and in a car nobody has ever identified the difference.

Lossless files are awkward to send. An MP3 is a quarter of the size and the recipient does not need a particular player.
Frequently asked questions
Am I losing quality by doing this?
Yes, definitively and by design. FLAC is lossless, meaning it reconstructs the original samples exactly; MP3 is lossy and discards what the ear is least likely to notice. Whether you can hear the difference is a separate question and for most people, on most equipment, in most listening situations, the answer is no. But the file is genuinely not the same, and it is worth being clear about that rather than reassuring.
Is FLAC the same thing as WAV?
No, and the difference is the point of FLAC. WAV is uncompressed — it stores every sample at full size. FLAC compresses, usually to about half, and does it losslessly, so decoding a FLAC gives back exactly the samples that went in. You get the same audio as a WAV in far less space, at the cost of needing software that understands the format.
Why bother with FLAC at all if MP3 is fine?
Because an archive and a listening copy are different things. A FLAC library can be re-encoded to any future format without accumulating loss, which an MP3 library cannot — every conversion from an MP3 starts from what the MP3 already discarded. People keep FLAC as the master and generate MP3s from it when a device needs them, which is exactly what this page is for.
How much smaller will the MP3 be?
Usually a third to a quarter of the FLAC. FLAC has already compressed the audio losslessly by roughly half compared to raw samples, so it is starting from a smaller number than a WAV would. A typical album at FLAC might be 300 MB and at MP3 around 90 MB.
