Add the ODT
Choose the OpenDocument Text file from LibreOffice, OpenOffice, Collabora, or another compatible editor. Save the editable ODT first if it is still being revised, since the PDF is a presentation copy rather than a new master.

Export to PDF
LibreOffice opens the ODT and lays out its pages on our server before exporting a PDF. The result records page size, margins, text placement, and rendered objects for the recipient's viewer or printer.

Review the downloaded PDF at normal and print size. Inspect custom fonts, tables, footnotes, page styles, headers, anchored images, and the final page before treating the fixed export as ready for delivery.
How it works
LibreOffice reads the ODT package and exports it through its PDF path. An ODT is a structured OpenDocument package containing XML for text, styles, page settings, lists, tables, fields, and relationships to resources. The exporter resolves those instructions using the fonts and layout engine available on the server, then writes pages whose geometry and visible content can be opened by a PDF viewer.
This is a change in purpose rather than just a change in extension. The ODT remains comfortable to revise because it stores document structure. The PDF records the result of laying out that structure. A recipient does not need the same office suite to see the same page, but the author loses the convenient style and object model from the delivery copy. Preserve both when future editing or auditability matters.
Why the open format still needs a visual check
ODT improves interoperability by using a published document model supported by more than one office suite. It does not embed the whole rendering environment. Fonts may be installed on one workstation and absent on another. Page styles can include different margins, headers, footers, and first-page rules. Anchored images, side notes, footnotes, columns, and tables also interact with the pagination engine.
As a result, a source that looked balanced in an author's editor can export with a different last line or an extra page. That is not a contradiction in the format's openness; it is the difference between an editable set of layout instructions and a fixed rendering made by a particular environment. Inspect the output in a PDF viewer and, when physical size matters, in print preview rather than relying on the source window alone.
A practical acceptance pass
Start with the first page and the last page, then inspect every page containing a table, chart, image, footnote, manual break, or unusual font. Confirm that headings are not stranded, small text remains legible, page numbers are sequential, and multilingual characters use the intended glyphs. Check the PDF's paper size and orientation against the delivery requirement; a fixed page is only useful when it is the right fixed page.
If the PDF is for a contract, public handout, financial statement, or print job, compare it with an approved reference and retain the ODT alongside the accepted export. If the recipient needs to edit, stop at ODT or use a suitable editable interchange format. ODT to PDF is the right final step when the open document has been reviewed and the next person needs a dependable page, not another set of authoring instructions.

An open-standard board report for circulation
The board members need a stable review copy rather than an editable office package. The ordinary text and tables are well suited to PDF export, while the fixed page boundary stops each recipient's office suite from making a different pagination decision. A final visual check still confirms chart labels and page numbers at the intended print size.
A multilingual handout using an unavailable font
OpenDocument preserves an editable description of the handout, but it does not necessarily carry every font the document references. A metrically different substitute can alter wrapping and move a deliberate break. Check the scripts, side notes, and page boundaries in the PDF, then choose an available font or correct the ODT before issuing the final copy.
Frequently asked questions
Does ODT to PDF preserve the document exactly?
It preserves the content as a fixed rendering, but exact visual identity still depends on the fonts and layout support available during export. Headings, paragraphs, lists, ordinary tables, images, and page settings usually have direct paths into PDF. Custom typefaces, anchored drawings, unusual fields, complex columns, and carefully balanced breaks deserve inspection. A PDF download confirms a valid fixed file, not that every source instruction was reproduced pixel for pixel.
Why should I review fonts after converting an open document?
OpenDocument describes the document structure and style references; it does not guarantee that the converter has every font named by the source. If a typeface is substituted, its character widths and line metrics can change wrapping, table height, and page breaks. Review headings, small text, multilingual glyphs, and the final page in the PDF. If the result matters for print or approval, use an available font in the ODT or perform the export in a controlled environment.
Is PDF still editable after ODT conversion?
PDF can sometimes be edited with specialized software, but that is not the same as retaining the ODT's document model. Styles, list definitions, page styles, and editable objects are no longer the convenient authoring source once the pages have been exported. Use the PDF for reading, printing, approval, and distribution; keep the ODT for revisions. If someone needs to change the text, send the editable ODT rather than asking them to reconstruct the document from a fixed rendering.
